June 9, 2023

Notion is a versatile all-in-one workspace that has revolutionized the way people create and deliver content. It is a platform where you can literally write anything in any way that you wish to showcase.

From educators to entrepreneurs, Notion offers a flexible and customized platform to organize your ideas, collaborate with teams and create any kind of content particularly for book writers and online course creators.

Notion wide range of features captivated me immediately. I was able to design course materials, elements and structure them just the way I wanted and also track my own progress towards my journey of online course creation process.

In this blog post, we will explore the incredible potential of Notion as a powerful tool for creating content for your online course. We will delve into the “how’s” and “why’s” of leveraging Notion’s versatile features and functionalities to design engaging and impactful course materials.

Why Choose Notion for Online Course Creation?

As someone who has personally experienced the challenges with online course creation, I found myself juggling multiple Excel sheets and backups, which often resulted in disorganized data for each module and lecture.

This led to inaccuracies in the recording sequence and delays in delivering the planned content.

But when I discovered Notion’s powerful features, including its structured database sheets, everything changed. I was finally able to maintain an organized structure for my content, with each module, section, or lecture neatly written and saved.

Notion’s status labels, such as “in progress” or “done,” allowed me to track the progress of each module I prepared, while additional labels like “published” and “marketed” helped me keep tags on the different stages of my course creation process.

Exploring Notion for online course content creation

To begin creating a database for your online course content on Notion, you should start by defining the structure of your course. Outline the modules, lessons, topics, or sections that will make up your curriculum.

Once you have a clear structure in mind, create a dedicated database in Notion for your course content. Customize the database properties to fit your needs, adding relevant information such as module titles, lesson descriptions, durations, and completion status.

Populate the database by adding entries for each module, lesson, or topic in your course, providing key details for each entry.

Utilize Notion’s powerful views to visualize and organize your content, choosing the view that best suits your workflow. Let’s start doing this practically with our Free Notion template.

1. Setup a Course Content Workspace

Start by setting up a dedicated workspace as a course dashboard for Notion. Do not think about creating any homepage or subpages, for now just build a simple workspace that should include all your modules, lessons, ppts and any other resources that supports the module content.

The first paragraph should be an introduction to the course you are developing followed by a new database sheet created below it for module-wise content creation of your course.

2. Structure your course content with tags and labels in Notion

Within the Course Content Workspace in Notion, your database sheet will serve as a valuable tool for organizing and creating your online course.

It will become your second brain, housing all the essential components of your course, including course materials, module details, templates, and any integrated resources from platforms like Dropbox or Google Sheets.

Each row in your database will represent a specific aspect of your course, such as a module, lesson, or topic. You can add tags, statuses, and filters to each row to track the progress and categorize your content effectively.

For example, you can add tags to indicate the completion status of each module or lesson, making it easy to identify what needs attention or review.

3. Keeping separate pages for Module Wise Content

As you go along with the flow of creating a database, remember that each module within the database should have a separate page of it own . And within each module you can toggle down the lessons/lectures with their titles and description.

The above screenshot of the Notion template has tags of M1, M2, M3 which are module-wise content written in separate pages.

4. Track you progress by Adding weekly and Monthly filters

Once you have set up the foundation of your content database sheet in Notion for your online course, you can take advantage of its powerful filtering capabilities to track the progress of your work.

By grouping your content based on specific timeframes, such as daily, weekly, or monthly, you can easily visualize and manage your course creation timeline.

With Notion’s flexible layout options, you can create separate layouts within the same sheet to represent different timeframes.

For example, you can have a layout dedicated to tracking daily progress, another layout for weekly milestones, and yet another layout for monthly goals. This allows you to have a comprehensive overview of your course creation journey while maintaining a clear and organized structure.

Key takeaways

By leveraging Notion’s capabilities, educators can create dynamic and engaging online courses that elevate the learning experience for their students.

Whether you’re just getting started or looking to enhance your existing courses, Notion provides the tools you need to design and deliver exceptional online learning content.

Remember, the possibilities with Notion are vast, so don’t hesitate to experiment and find innovative ways to engage and inspire your learners.
